January is National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month in the United States, a month set aside to recognize the role we can each play in ending all forms of slavery. Last year alone, the National Human Trafficking Hotline reported identification of more than 22,000 victims, 4,300 traffickers and 1,900 suspicious businesses. Of these cases, sexual exploitation continues to be the dominant form of trafficking in our country, representing 7 out of every 10 trafficking situations identified.
As a local nonprofit currently working with more than 130 survivors, we are committed to raising awareness of human trafficking, not just as a national issue, but one that is affecting every city in Hampton Roads. Together, we can create offramps for those who have experienced trafficking and help prevent the next generation from being exploited. In honor of Human Trafficking Prevention Month, we invited our supporters to start 2021 by educating themselves on the topic and identifying #onething they can do to make a difference this year. To get everyone started, we posted information on our Facebook and Instagram pages and promoted a featured event each week of the month. The recordings of those events remain accessible below for your viewing and sharing opportunities. |
